Join us for an exciting and fun Summer Raku class
Contemporary Raku is a modification and continuation of a 400-year-old Japanese pottery practice of making ware for the Tea Ceremony. Today we practice Raku firing for the opportunity to make and fire one piece at a time using post-firing reduction and controlling the glaze surface, as well as the making of the piece on a potter’s wheel or using hand-building techniques.
Using low-fire clay and glazes, the pieces are placed in a pre-heated kiln using tongs, fired to 1800 degrees, and removed from the kiln with tongs while still glowing hot. They are then placed in a container of combustible materials. When the combustible material begins to burn, the container is closed, creating a “reducing” atmosphere that changes the color of glazes and the clay body, making each piece unique. In this instance, the potter is able to work one-on-one with a single piece they have created and influence the surface of the piece using post-firing reduction
